The First Phase of Library Automation
Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) previously known as Islamic University College Malaysia (KUIM) is a new millennium university, committed to become a frontrunner university in Islamic studies, using the latest technology to solve current issues related to society and Islam. Accordingly, USIM Library has moved towards automation in line with the objectives of USIM.
The history of USIM Library automation began in 2001 when a new acquisition system was developed in collaboration of USIM Information Technology Center. The new system was aimed to enhance acquisition activities to become more efficient and effective. At the same time, the library applying Online Computer library Center (OCLC), a cataloging system, to describe the materials. Indirectly, the system facilated library staff in cataloging process since it managed to store data in MARC (Machine Readable Catalogue) format. The MARC records facilitated the process of data transfer when the library implementing the automation system.
In January 2006, the library main activities were gradually shifted from manual to the use of library system. It began with purchasing an Integrated Library System known as Virtua system in the end of 2005. The system enhanced the library process of acquiring, cataloging, retrieving as well as circulating materials. Users are more comfortable in retrieving materials when they only need to access the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) via Internet at the address http://kohalib.usim.edu.my/. In addition, they also may check their library account at anytime by login into Patron Access at the OPAC.
